Student Manager
Michigan State University Men's Basketball Team
As a student manager and practice player for the MSU hoops team, I helped manage daily operations, produced recruiting materials, wrote scouting reports, and edited video highlight tapes.
daily responsibilities
I did the dirty, behind-the-scenes work to keep the MSU basketball team running like the fine-tuned machine it is. I filled water bottles, wiped down floors, did laundry, and rebounded for players during practice. In addition to my daily tasks, I also used Photoshop to create recruiting materials such as mailers, booklets, and brochures.
I began breaking down film sophomore year with assistant coaches to create scouting reports and also became more involved in practice as a player on the scout team.
video production & highlight tapes
The team typically tabs one of its student managers as the head of its video production tasks. Although just a freshman, I jumped at the opportunity to edit and produce highlight videos for the team. My short films and tapes were often shown during crucial recruiting visits or played on a loop in hallways or conference rooms. In between practice and scouting opponents, I created 12-15 videos a season.
My Sophomore year, I created a pre-game highlight tape borrowing clips from the film 300. The tape eventually found its way to the athletic department and they asked if they could use it to kickoff midnight madness activities. The tape received such praise that they continued to use it before tip-off in the Breslin center throughout the season. You can see a low-quality version of the video below.
